Chronic Pain and Mental Health
Living with chronic pain can impact mental health in many ways. Many people living with chronic pain report feeling isolated, depressed, and have difficulty feeling heard in their communities.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, People living with chronic pain are at heightened risk for mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Chronic pain can affect sleep, increase stress levels and contribute to depression. An estimated 35% to 45% of people with chronic pain experience depression.
It is so important to advocate for self and others who live with chronic pain. Living with chronic pain is difficult on it’s own and to then experience mental health concerns must be overwhelming. Chronic pain has been more readily talked about and many resources exist to offer support, but there is more to be done.
