Loneliness in the age of technology

Technology and social media are truly a blessing, but bring some drawbacks. So many of us use our phones and are instantly connected to millions of people across the world. We can order anything with the touch of a finger, and bring the entire world into our homes with a click of the button. But, so many people feel a sense of loneliness. Browsing social media sites can add to that feeling of social isolation and loneliness. It’s that dreaded FOMO feeling. It’s normal.

So, in the age of social media and navigating the digital world, how do we stay connected? Humans are social beings. Touch starved is a real phenomenon. We need human interaction, face to face engagement, hugs, laughter, eye contact. It’s easy to fall into the routine of work, come home, order out, scroll social media, and go to sleep.

Use social media to your advantage. Join safe and legitimate meet up groups of your interests, attend community events, volunteer. At first, you may not know anyone. That’s okay. The more you attend, the more you will build connections that can lead to friendships.

Think back to when you were in school. We were in school 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, all year long, for many years. We eventually got to know our schoolmates, and built life-long friendships.

Adulthood can bring perks of more freedom and autonomy, but can lack in making friends. It can be difficult to make friends at work too, which is perfectly fine. Some people do not want to mix business with personal life.

Stay connected with family, childhood or college friends. Make a phone call or facetime. Get involved with community events that you’re interested in. Become a “regular” at a local cafe, bookstore, or club. Suggest meeting in person with a friend you have made online while playing video games or chatting on a forum. Of course, be sure it is safe and take necessary precautions to maintain safety.

Regardless of what you decide to do, remember that you are not alone. Help is always available when feeling lonely. Sometimes social anxiety can play a factor, which counseling is helpful to address that as well.

You are worthy of friends and meaningful connections, so take a leap of faith, and get involved. There are so many wonderful people out in the world who would enjoy and value your company.
